Our group met during class time today until 2:00 in the Wyman building to wrap things up for our presentation on Thursday. We finished our group report by adding in the table of contents and headers for each section of our paper. Andrea completed the outline. We read our final draft as a group up on the big screen and made sure everything was exactly how we wanted it.We completed our PowerPoint presentation, and decided which slides each group member would go over during our final presentation. We did a quick run through of our slides and practiced what we would say while presenting each slide. Doing this as a group, was very helpful as we each contributed and shared ideas about what should be addressed with each slide. We timed ourselves to get an estimate of how long our presentation will be to ensure that we reach the time requirement. We printed off our paper, discussed what we were going to wear for clothing, and called it a day!

Andrea is going to send each of us our PowerPoint slides and Nathan is going to email everyone a copy of our final report. Each of us is expected to practice our part of the presentation, and show up prepared to present on Thursday. We may decide to meet tomorrow night or Thursday before class to go over our presentation one last time!

Good job everyone! Proud of us!

Thursday we get 'er done!!!! :)

Tuesday, November 25 Meeting

Tina, Nathan, Andrea, and Gina met for about an hour in Wyman to work on our paper some more as well as work on our presentation. Andrea did a great job putting together our Prezi presentation and we all did a good job collaborating on our paper.

Thursday, November 20, 2014

Tuesday we met after class for 30 minutes to discuss our meeting on thursday and what we wanted to accomplish. Today, we all met for 3.5 hours in the University Center to write our group paper, and get started on our PowerPoint Presentation. It was a successful meeting, and we got a lot done. We are using class time tuesday to finalize our project and rehearse who is going to say what part during the final presentation.

Brief Nov. 6 Meeting

Tina, Nathan, Andrea, and Gina met for 15 minutes after class to discuss what data we want to collect. We thought it would be useful to ask friends from other universities if they have text messages when classes are canceled. This will be there start of collecting our data. Because we did not have all members present, we decided to set aside an hour next Thursday to meet and go over what all of our tasks are moving forward on our final project.

Hi Group 3! Here is the feedback on your presentation:

  • What kind of security issues arise with texting notifications? Do they have access to info on our phones?
  • How do you get word out about this idea?
  • There is a lack of tech awareness, I was unaware of the texting service.
  • I check my email every hour out of anxiety about this issue -- I hate it!
  • This may not be a university problem. I feel like it is typically the students' fault for not checking email. Focus more on encouraging students to check their email or sign up for texts.
  • Are there really that many class cancellations on campus for this to be a problem?
  • Research how other campuses similar to our are dealing with the problem.
  • How can you make students aware of text notifications?
  • What other options are available to students besides the text notification?
  • Is this text notification different from the safety and weather texts?
  • How do you know professors hear a lot of complaints? How can we sign up for text alerts?
  • How many people did you survey? How can we sign up?
  • How are you going to make sure that students hear about the texts?
  • Would professors actually use the new technology?
  • Is text messaging the solution?
  • And this one is from Grace :) I had no idea this option even existed, so I've no idea how it works or how to actually use it…but I'm intrigued!

Hey Guys!

First of all, thank you for guys for getting together to finish putting our group report together, I think it turned out really good! I'm glad everything worked out even though a couple of us had to work. I think we split up the paper really well and everyone did a nice job of fulfilling their portion of the paper... thank you Andrea for the beautiful color coding! :)

Moving on...

Today, we met for about 20 minutes just to discuss what our next steps will be. Since Tuesday we are going to be going over the final presentation guidelines in class, we decided over the weekend to just brainstorm and post ideas contributing to our final solution. I believe we have come up with some great ways to advertise, and got some good advice from our speaker today about how to get the word out about our problem/solution.

Some things we talked about doing: (please add ideas if you have any!)
  • Creating a flyer to post around campus.
  • Meeting with DoTS people again to help get the step by step directions on how to use the text message feature.
  • Take a screen shot/photos of the steps to use in our advertising/PowerPoint/emails.
  • Contacting the different colleges about getting the word out to their departments.
  • Creating a PowerPoint to send out via email.
  • Creating a TV advertisement.

I think we have come up with some great ideas that will help solve our problem.
I believe these solutions we came up with are attainable, and our problem will get solved!

***The plan for next week... after Tuesday's class we will pick a day to meet and create a plan of action to start putting our solutions into play and establish what needs to get accomplished to ensure a successful final presentation! :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Monday, October 27, 2014

Today Nathan, Tina, and I met for about 30 minutes to put together our Interim group paper. Katrina and Gina had work but sent us their portion of the paper. We read through our group paper to make sure everything evenly flowed together, and we also discussed what our next step should be in our project and coming up with a solution. We will fill in the other group members in class tomorrow!

Tuesday

I saw over email that a couple of our team members wanted to meet before class to go over our presentation.  I have class right before our class so i won't be able to meet up but if anyone wanted to meet Monday night at some point i could do that!

Sunday, October 19, 2014

I feel bad that I was not able to make on Thursday to finish up the Power Point but I was not feeling well. I read through the Power Point and Outline and it looks great! I think our topic will interest a lot of students and will be helpful to them.

Meeting Minutes - October 14
We met in the library today from 12:30-1:25p.m.
We worked on our powerpoint for our project and got very far! We came up with survey questions to ask five students by Thursday.
We also plan to meet again on Thursday, October 15th.

Grace, Nathan and I (Tina) should show up now on the blog...can you see us?

Monday, October 13, 2014

Hello group!

Gina, I am glad you finally got in! For some reason it is still not showing Nathan and Tina, although they have both posted comments on the blog?! We need to figure this out and make sure everyone is getting points for participating because everyone has been participating and posting on the blog.

We will be meeting tomorrow after class. We need to start getting surveys out too so we can use that information in our presentation. We need to start our PowerPoint either tomorrow (Tuesday) after class or Thursday after class.

So for tomorrow everyone bring your ideas for the PowerPoint and survey Qs!

Hope you all had a great weekend! See ya tomorrow!

Katrina :)
I finally was able to figure out how to sign in and work this blog!! So it seems like tomorrow (Tuesday) we are going to chat with Grace for a few minutes after class to make sure our topic will work. We will meet after class and start working on the Power Point and hopefully meet again on Thursday to finish things up and be ready to present next week.

10/2/14

Today we met for 30 minutes after class and got more information from DOTS about the services that are available to students through email. We further discussed our proposal plan, and what the next step is!

Problem: Lacking communication/advertising in alternative email (or texting) services provided for students
Cause & effects: Not everyone has a smart phone to directly receive their emails on. This becomes an issue when a class is canceled and someone does not have their computer on them and they end up going to class which results in angry students, wasted time, and even frustrated professors due to the complaints, etc. We have great services and organizations on campus to help with these kind of situations, however they are not communicated and or advertised to students on campus.

Survey questions to ask other UWRF students if they are aware of the text message/email options available to them:
1. Do you have a smart phone?
2. Have you ever gone to class not knowing it was canceled due to not checking your school email beforehand?
3. Are you aware of the options available on your school email to send you text messages?
4. Would you prefer receiving a text message when a class is canceled?

Side note: There has also been other occasions when a professor has canceled class in a short notice which doesn't give students much time to check their email because that student may be coming to class straight from work, or straight from another class, etc.

Thursday Meeting!

Hey Guys!

I would have to say today's meeting has been our most successful meeting yet. During our 35 minute meeting we collected some good info from the DoTS guys about different solutions to our problem. They were very helpful and kind sharing ideas and possibilities for our project. We will definitely be meeting with them again at a later time during our project.

A challenge we are facing is how to word our issue as we need to keep it narrow and easy to understand. Grace maybe you can help us with that!

After our meeting with the DoTS guys, we pulled out the guidelines for our project focusing on what we need to accomplish in our short presentation.

Over the weekend:

  • Brainstorm and answer the questions that are stated under the short presentation guidelines. (What is the problem? Causes/effects? Why a concern at UWRF?)
  • We will each post our answers on the blog by Tuesday next week.
  • On Thursday we plan to meet and go over the answers we all submitted, sharing ideas which we will then summarize and put on our PowerPoint presentation.
  • Formulate possible survey questions we will ask UWRF students and staff.

Glad to see after today's meeting we are getting the ball rolling! Looking forward to seeing all the ideas we come up with over the weekend!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

Hello everybody!
Our first official meeting seemed to go extremely well!  I believe we all have the same expectations about our group project and agree on how we want to approach it.
Our first meeting in class on Thursday consisted off:
  • Exchanging names and contact information
  • Arranging schedules/meeting times
  • Discussing roles and procedures
  • Sharing topic ideas
  • Assigning homework for the weekend
We decided that we are going to try to meet after class on Tuesdays and Thursdays even if it’s just for a short time to discuss progress, ideas, roles, etc.  After each meeting, each group member will have a role/task to do before the next meeting. We will also discuss future meeting times as our schedules seem to be inconsistent, changing week to week.
After each meeting I will be recording what was discussed/decided/accomplished, what to work on until the next meeting, ideas/brainstorms, suggestions, concerns, etc. Everyone will have access to the blog and welcome to provide feedback or anything I may have forgotten.

Expectations:
  • If missing a meeting, contact and inform other group members
  • Check blog often  to stay informed
  • Communicate with group members with any concern/suggestions/ideas
  • Texting/calling is the preferred communication method
  • Leave each meeting with a task
  • Complete given tasks in a timely manner
  • Attend group meetings as much as possible, even for a short time
  • HAVE FUN AND GET ‘ER DONE!!!

Group Project
I believe we decided our topic will be the issue of lack of communication when it comes to class cancelations. We shared some ideas for possible solutions such as text alerts and smart phone apps. We still need to come up with a good way to word this issue thinking of a name for our project.
Weekend HW: Brainstorm ideas for problem/project name, and possible solutions to share at next meeting. Things to think about:
  • What is the problem?
  • Effects of the problem?
  • Who does it impact?
  • Why should we care?
  • What will the solution address?
  • What is the best solution?
  • Costs/resources?
  • Statistics/surveys?
